I had been expecting them, awaiting them.
I knew their time was near.
I saw the first of them today.
And the joy they brought quite took me by surprise,
and the memories they evoked.
Lambs’ Tails, we called them then.
And they recalled to me my boyhood friends
and the lanes and fields we roved
when to us the world was new.
Now more will follow day on day;
next week they will be all around me,
to left and right, on several stretches of the Path.
But today my joy is the special joy
that comes with friends I have not seen
for such a long, long time.
