Fairy Fingers

Fr La’s weekly ‘Pause and Ponder’ from along the Pilgrim Path at Lough Derg. This week’s reflection, ‘Fairy Fingers’.

The foxgloves now are out in force

along the verge between the path and the trees

This sentinel stands forth alone, taller than myself.

Others are shy and they prefer the shade.

Close up I notice inside every bell

the delicate pattern Nature has inscribed:

a signpost for the nectar-seeking bee.

Fairy Fingers is the other name

by which we knew them in our childhood days.

We would put one on a finger and make a wish.

The pilgrim, too, is someone with a wish,

and a heart that longs to rest at last in God.
