A Wetland View

Fr La’s weekly ‘Pause and Ponder’ from along the Pilgrim Path at Lough Derg. This week’s reflection – ‘A Wetland View’.

A Wetland View

Lough views from the Pilgrim Path

are mostly views of Lough Derg.

But around the headland

after the Saints Island shore

we catch a glimpse through the trees

of another lough: the Black Lough,

a wetland landscape with room aplenty

in times of abundant rain

for water to gather and spread and lie and wait

til it finds its way via Lough Derg

to the Foyle and to the Atlantic.

How different the scenes in Germany recently

where raging rivers could not cope with the rainfall

and water took so great a toll.

In my own life, too, I need this capacity:

space for the occasional surge of things

to gather and steady themselves

until they can find their level safely again.
