Fr La’s weekly ‘Pause and Ponder’ from along the Pilgrim Path at Lough Derg. This week’s reflection – ‘Written in Stone’.
Written in Stone
Out on the Path, this autumn afternoon,
late sunshine lights the wooden cross
on the boulder at the quarry behind the rock
that we sometimes use for Mass.
In the days since last I passed this way,
someone creative has been here
placing pebbles to shape a celtic cross.
As I pause and ponder my gaze takes in
the weathering process at work on the stone
that first splits off a splinter and then breaks it down
into pebbles and sand and dust.
And I lift my thoughts to the Maker of All,
who set in train the forces of nature
to shape and re-shape this landscape,
and to place our creative humanity within it.
